Jonathan had to go to Pasadena today to be in a photo shoot. When he finished, we decided it might be nice to stop off at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park. There are many stars buried at this cemetery including Bette DavisLucille Ball, Telly Savalas, Liberace, Stan Laurel and Ricky Nelson.

The cemetery grounds are well maintained.   It is in a beautiful place, with a view over the valley towards the San Gabriel mountains.

As you can see in the photo below, it is done in white, with a large statute on top, though it is not of her; this same statue appeared in other parts of the cemetery as well. On her tombstone is written: “She did it the hard way”, an epitaph that had been suggested to her by Joseph L. Mankiewicz shortly after they had filmed All About Eve.

Bette Davis

Bette Davis appeared in over 100 films receiving two Oscars, 10 nominations and three Emmy awards. A fellow Bostonian she born in Lowell and later moved to Newton.

Speaking of New England, in the middle of Forest Lawn is a white church with large steeple.   With the green hills behind it, and a bit of autumn chill in the air, we felt as if we were in Vermont.

There were some beautiful Christmas decorations on some of the graves which was  poignant. And then it was time to go home, but thankfully, with so many people on vacation, traffic was light, even during rush hour.

Bette Davis became even more embedded in pop culture history when Kim Carnes sang the #1 song Bette Davis Eyes in 1981.
